Steffi Stølen, over Fjell farm - Facing the sea

About 30 minutes west of Bergen, in the center of Fjell in Øygarden, you’ll find Steffi Stølen.

The area is easily accessible by car and public transport, yet it remains peaceful and secluded, with close proximity to beautiful and natural surroundings.
The cabin is located not far from Fjell Fortress, making it easy to combine your stay at the cabin with hikes, history, and amazing views of the ocean to the west.

Visiting Steffi Stølen, with its westward view toward the sea, is a truly unique experience. Here, you are close to nature, elevated above the ground, surrounded by calming silence and fresh air. When the sun sets in the west and paints the sky and sea in warm, rosey tones, a magical moment arises — one that is hard to find elsewhere.

The interplay between the height among the treetops and the open horizon toward the sea provides both outlook, perspective, and a sense of freedom — perfect for disconnecting from everyday life and simply being present in the moment.

The cabin has six sleeping places, making it well suited for families as well as small groups. The cozy kitchen invites for simple meals and good conversations after a day outdoors. The area offers excellent hiking opportunities, with beautiful trails through forests and open landscapes, and plenty of possibilities to explore nature on foot all year round.

Steffi Stølen uses a wood-burning stove as its source of heating. Wood-burning creates a special atmosphere, especially in the late evenings. The gentle crackling of the fire, the warm glow, and the comforting heat make the space extra cozy and inviting — perfect for long conversations, a good book, or simply quiet moments after a day spent in nature.

      Sustainable Design

From the edge of the forest by Fjell Fortress, grew the Sitka spruce that would go on to have a truly special journey. Kristofer Lie was there when the trees were planted. Small, slender shoots that he followed year after year, as they stretched toward the sky and gradually took shape as the forest that would one day become the walls of a cabin.

When the time came, He and his sons felled the trees and brought them the short distance down to the family owned timbermill. There, Kristofer himself stood at the saw, letting the tree trunk get a new life. 7x1-inch planks gleaming with sap and smelling of fresh timber. Then his sons took over the work. A natural inheritance of both labor and love for the craft. They planed the boards with tongue and groove, charred them using the ancient Japanese technique: Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi), brushed them clean, and treated them with Osmo wax. Father and sons — three pairs of hands, one story, one bond.

The larch timber from Skaganeset in Skogsvåg followed the same family journey. Sawn by Kristofer, shaped by his sons, treated with the same care and layers of wax—and now the floor lies warm and alive throughout the cabin. Together, these materials form not just a cabin, but a story — one that you share with everyone who steps across the threshold: a story of nature, of traditions, and of a family standing strong, rooted like the trees they have worked with.
